The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to introduce a bus outfitted with gym equipment to meet the health and fitness needs of women. Recognizing the challenges posed by changing lifestyles, in which people find it difficult to prioritize health, particularly working women and housewives caught up in daily routines, the BMC intends to address this issue through the introduction of mobile gyms.

The Origins of the Open Gym Concept

Former environment minister Aditya Thackeray introduced the concept of open gyms in Mumbai a few years ago. Despite the establishment of open gyms throughout the city, the response has been less than favourable, and the equipment is now in need of maintenance.

Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the Guardian Minister of Suburbs, proposed the idea of a “moving gym for women.” The District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC) fund, a state government fund for each district, will be used to fund this initiative. The plan is to deploy a mobile gym as a pilot project in Mumbai suburb slums.

On board are a female driver, a female attendant, and a female trainer.

According to BMC officials, the bus will be transformed into a gym, with a female driver, a female attendant, and a female trainer on board. The lady trainers will educate women on physical fitness, share information, and guide them through simple exercises, with a focus on women in slum areas. The mobile gym will visit different neighbourhoods every day.

“BMC will spend Rs 80 lakh for modification of the bus and installation of gym equipment,” a corporation official said. It will also spend Rs 1.42 crores on gym maintenance over the next three years.
